In 1955, women from Hiroshima whose faces had been deformed by the atom bomb flew to New York for reconstructive surgery. Dr. William H. Hitzig, the plastic surgeon, took them to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on May 9, 1955.

'Oppenheimer' is actually a really interesting exploration into masculinity and gender. Bear in mind I've only watched the film once and my thoughts aren't entirely coherent but I wanted to share some.

Robert and Kitty's relationship is really intriguing and an insight into relationships and gender dynamics of the time. Kitty is suffocated by her kids and role as a mother but pushes through and sticks by Robert's side, not only because she's really loyal but because that's what women were expected to do. She's sacrificed a lot of her happiness and now her husband is a great man of history.

We see Robert Oppenheimer in a very emotional light, with close ups of Murphy's amazing acting really driving this home. It's good to see how someone in Oppenheimer's position would actually behave, and the stress and anxiety he feels is built into the film. At one point, Truman calls Oppenheimer a 'crybaby' and it really reminded me how important the obvious showing of Oppenheimer's emotions is in this film. Not only does it help us connect with him as a character, but it's acknowledging men's emotions and a fact that this male character can be and is vulnerable (which is an idea reinforced by the scenes in the board room).

Also just the general details, like the chemist arguing with another member of the team because he doesn't understand female anatomy and acts like she can't properly do her work. Really reminds you that it was a different time.

Sorry if none of this makes sense or if it seems a bit off, just what I took away from the film, especially because I saw 'Barbie' a few days before and that was very focused on gender as a theme.

Abandoned Uranium Mines: An "Overwhelming Problem" in the Navajo Nation

There's an old uranium mine on rancher Larry Gordy's grazing land near Cameron, Ariz. Like hundreds of other abandoned mines in the Navajo Nation, the United States' largest Indian reservation, it looks as if it might still be in use—tailings, or waste products of uranium processing, are still piled everywhere, and the land isn't fenced off. "It looks like Mars," said Marsha Monestersky, program director of Forgotten People, an advocacy organization for the western region of the vast Navajo Nation, which covers 27,000 square miles in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is currently embroiled in a massive effort to assess 520 open abandoned uranium mines all over the vast reservation. (Forgotten People says there are even more mines on Navajo land: about 1,300.) Earlier this month, the cleanup got a boost from a bankruptcy settlement with Oklahoma City-based chemical company Tronox Inc., which will give federal and Navajo Nation officials $14.5 million to address the reservation's uranium contamination.

During the Cold War, private companies such as Tronox's former parent company, Kerr-McGee Corp., operated uranium mines under U.S. government contracts, removing four million tons of ore that went into making nuclear weapons and fuel. When demand dried up with the end of the era, companies simply abandoned their mines as they were.

It's been a few(?) weeks but I think what irks me about the Oppenheimer spectacle is that I'd find it very hard to believe that Hollywood (as it stands today) would ever make anywhere close to such a big highlight promotion to a movie dedicated to say, the Rosenberg trials.

The USA executed a Jewish couple on flimsy suspicions that they were leaking atom bomb secrets to their enemies (the atom bomb that America gladly hired "former" n-zi scientists to help make)

The US wasn't even at any formal war at the time, it was officially peacetime, but they deemed this Jewish couple enough of an enemy to murder them for getting in the way of making the A-bomb.

The executive choices for which parts of history receive these gigantic and public-conscious-defining spectacles on the most massive media platforms is very curious to me.

Yeah and like.... it's not like the movie depicted the creation of the atom bomb in an angle that isn't really depicted in film. They could have focused on the ethical conflicts the Jewish scientists, such as Oppenheimer and Einstein felt, as well as the feeling of urgency they felt because of the Holocaust (remember, the Jews recruited were recruited because the US knew their rage and wanting to bomb Nazis and wanted to exploit it). But instead the movie barely acknowledges Oppenheimer or Einstein or any of the other Jewish scientists' Jewishness.

Like, it's honestly lazy telling a story that's already been told in film so many times before. Talk about the aftermath of the testing in New Mexico, or the aftermath of the bombing in Japan. Talk about the Jewish scientists and how their identities interacted with the Manhattan project and the antisemitism they faced. Talk about the post-WW2 Red Scare and how it disproportionately targeted Jews, Black people, and gay people. Where's the nuance, the focus on the untold parts?

Today August 6th and later August 9th will mark the 79th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This event marks the 1st and God willing only time when nuclear weapons were used in history. Since then history was permanently altered for better or for worse.

This choice is argued for as justified for numerous reasons. One of these chief arguments originally coming from the Truman administration is that of a grim calculation. They made the utilitarian argument that if these 2 bombs can end the war in 2 radical new demonstrations of force killing 100s of thousands then it is worth using. Since in November the USA alongside her allies would invade the home islands. This invasion in conservative estimates would lead to millions more war dead since Japan intended to mirror Germany and to fight to the bitter end. Furthermore take a moment and imagine yourself as the Truman administration in winter. You need to justify a draft expansion to a war worry nation for the Japanese meat grinder where millions of young men have already died. I can empathize with this sentiment and see the reasoning but the Magistrium of the Roman Catholic church and a deeper dive into history shows the use of Little Boy and Fat Man were morally grave actions.

I won't go into all details but I shall provide 2 excellent youtube videos covering this topic. One from World War Two (yes that's the name), and one from the Counsel of Trent. Now the utilitarian argument can overlap with the objective moral truths found in Christianity it still is deficient.

The Atomic bombings were unjustifiable. They targeted civilians by dropping on city centers to maximize their deaths. Miles away from significant military assets and factories. What helped to justify is during the course of ww2 both sides experimented with different theories of targeted civilians. This is because the powers involved were in a state of total war. This meant all sides sought to get the most out of their resources so the line between civilian and soldier was murky. Strategic bombing theory which developed in Europe in the 1920s was put into full effect with the UK under Air Marshal Harris against Germany and her allies. The USA from 1943 onwards was around the clock bombing Japan's economy to ruins. Now these were not justified either. This bombings intentionally ruined 100s of thousands of homes, killed 10s of thousands civilians. People who were not soldiers, but mostly women and children.

One final thing I shall note is that the United States and her allies made blunders in negotiations which prolonged the war. Imperial Japan would have been more keen to come to the peace table if they knew the Emperor would be allowed to live and keep his title even as a puppet. We knew about this through spying and backdoor diplomatic channels but still kept ambiguous on this. This isn't the only blunder but this is the most notable in my opinion.
